SUNとAppleのニアミスを語るSUNの創業者四人の会話の中に、SUNのキャッチフレーズ「The network is the computer」が主任研究員のJohn Gageが考え出したいきさつが出てくる（そのオリジナル？は、以下の引用のようだが）。この言葉は、SUNのキャッチフレーズというよりも、Appleのそれとしてもふさわしいもののように思える。

The machine is the manual -- you don't need a manual. The network is the computer -- things are distributed.
